Recurring Bills

7 articles

The Recurring page is your command center for all regular expenses. It helps you keep track of everything that hits your account on a schedule, so you're never surprised by a renewal.

What it tracks

  • Subscriptions: Streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, Disney+.
  • Bills: Utilities, internet, phone plans.
  • Fixed Costs: Rent, mortgage, childcare, gym memberships.

Key Features

  • Summary Cards: At the top, you'll see your total monthly recurring spend, broken down by what's Shared vs. Personal.
  • Views: Toggle between a standard List view and a Calendar view to visualize due dates.
  • Filters: Switch between All, Shared, and Personal to focus on household bills or your own private subscriptions.

Halfway uses smart detection to automatically find your recurring expenses so you don't have to add them manually. We use two main methods:

1. Known Merchants

For popular services like Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, and major utility providers, we can detect a subscription immediately from just one transaction. We recognize the merchant name and automatically suggest it as a recurring bill.

2. Pattern Analysis

For everything else, we analyze your transaction history (looking back up to 150 days) to find patterns. We look for:

  • Similar Amounts: Transactions that are within 15% of each other in value.
  • Regular Intervals: Transactions that happen on a Weekly, Biweekly, or Monthly schedule.
  • Frequency: We generally need to see at least 2 similar transactions to establish a pattern.

Confidence Scoring

We assign a confidence score to every detected pattern. The more consistent the amount and date, and the more times it has occurred, the higher the confidence. High-confidence patterns may be auto-confirmed, while others will appear as "Suggested" for you to review.

When Halfway detects a new potential recurring expense, it doesn't clutter your main list immediately. Instead, it marks it as Suggested.

The Review Process

  1. You'll see a banner on the Recurring page or receive a notification when new suggestions are found.
  2. Click Review Suggestions to enter the review mode.
  3. For each suggestion, you can:
    • Confirm: Add it to your active recurring list. You can set it as Shared or Personal right there.
    • Dismiss: Tell Halfway this isn't a recurring bill (e.g., a one-time purchase at a store you visit often). We won't ask about it again.

Status Types

  • Suggested: Needs your attention. Not yet included in total calculations.
  • Confirmed: Active recurring bill. Included in your monthly totals and calendar.
  • Dismissed: Ignored. Hidden from lists and calculations.

If a bill hasn't been detected automatically (or if you want to track something paid in cash/outside connected accounts), you can add it manually.

How to add

  1. Go to the Recurring page.
  2. Click the + button (floating action button on mobile, or "Add" button on desktop).
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Merchant Name: Who are you paying?
    • Amount: The expected monthly/weekly cost.
    • Frequency: Choose Weekly, Biweekly, or Monthly.
    • Next Due Date: When is the next payment expected?
  4. Select the Split Type (Shared or Personal) to ensure it's allocated correctly in your budget.
  5. Click Save.

The Calendar view helps you visualize your cash flow by showing exactly when bills will hit your account throughout the month.

Switching Views

On the Recurring page, look for the view toggle icons near the top right of the list section. Click the Calendar icon to switch modes.

Using the Calendar

  • Dots: Each dot represents a bill due on that day.
  • Colors: Dots are color-coded (e.g., Primary color for Shared, Grey for Personal).
  • Details: Click on any day to see a list of bills due on that specific date.
  • Planning: Use this view to ensure you have enough funds in your account for upcoming heavy-billing weeks (like the 1st of the month).

Halfway helps you stay on top of payments so you never miss a due date.

"Renewing Soon" Summary

At the top of the Recurring page, the Renewing Soon card highlights the number of bills due within the next 7 days. It's a quick way to see immediate obligations.

Dashboard Widget

Your main Dashboard also features an Upcoming Bills widget, giving you a snapshot of what's due soon without needing to dig into the full list.

Push Notifications

If you've enabled notifications, Halfway can send you a push alert when a bill is coming up. You can manage these alerts in Settings > Notifications.

Many couples share subscriptions like streaming services, a family phone plan, or a gym membership. Halfway helps you track these so each partner pays their fair share.

Automatic detection

If you have a bank account connected (Premium feature), Halfway automatically detects recurring charges from popular services like Netflix, Spotify, and Disney+. These will appear as suggestions on your Recurring page.

Marking a subscription as shared

  1. Go to the Recurring page.
  2. Find the subscription in your list (or review it from the suggestions).
  3. Click on it and set the split type to Shared.
  4. Choose how to split it: by income ratio, 50/50, or a custom amount.

Manual tracking

If the subscription is paid outside your connected bank (for example, charged to a card you have not connected), you can add it manually:

  1. Click the + button on the Recurring page.
  2. Enter the service name, amount, and billing frequency.
  3. Set it as Shared and choose the split type.

Tracking total subscription costs

The summary cards at the top of the Recurring page show your total monthly recurring spend, broken down by Shared and Personal. This makes it easy to see exactly how much you and your partner spend on subscriptions each month.
