No, linking bank accounts is optional. The Free plan is designed for manual transaction entry. Bank linking is a feature of our Premium plan, which automates the process by syncing transactions directly from your financial institutions via Plaid.

When you connect a bank, we import the history your bank makes available — usually several months, though the exact amount varies by bank. All of it is categorised automatically and saved as Personal, so your reports and net worth are useful straight away and none of it changes what you and your partner owe each other. Your Review Queue starts fresh from the moment you connect. From then on, we'll ask you whether each new transaction is shared or personal, and most take a single tap. One thing worth knowing: banks often post a purchase a few days after you make it. If you bought something last week and it only appears tomorrow, it will show up in your Review Queue. That's expected — the queue is about when a transaction arrives, not the date on it. Want to split something from before you connected? Nothing is locked in. Open the Transactions page, find it, and change it from Personal to Shared anytime.

After creating your account, go to Settings > Household, and use the 'Invite Partner' button. They'll receive an email invitation to join your household. Once they accept, you'll both be able to see and manage shared expenses together.

While transactions are for one-time or irregular expenses, for subscriptions you simply set the amount, due date, and split preference once, and Halfway will automatically track them each month.

Forecasting projects your net worth years into the future using the accounts, income and spending Halfway already tracks, so there's no spreadsheet and no separate planning app. After a short setup asking your age and when you'd like to stop working, your projection is ready, and you can add life events like buying a home, having a kid, changing jobs or retiring and watch the line move. Forecasting is part of Plus, or Premium in the US and Canada. One subscription covers both partners. If you were already using Forecasting before it moved to a paid plan, you keep it.

Yes, and that's what it was built for. Most planning tools assume one shared pot. Halfway can project just you, you plus everything you share, or both of you together. The joint view needs both partners to opt in, and a forecast never exposes your partner's personal accounts. The same privacy rules apply here as everywhere else in Halfway.

It's an estimate, not a prediction, and it is not financial advice. Halfway shows a low, expected and high range rather than one confident number, because small changes in assumptions produce very different results over decades. Every assumption behind the projection is visible and you can change it. Forecasting is an educational tool: it is not investment, tax, legal or financial advice, and it is not a recommendation. A forecast is rebuilt from your current data, so it moves when your finances move. Connecting or removing an account, a change in your recorded income, a different year of spending history, or editing an assumption will all shift the projection. Changing your retirement age moves the whole curve. If a number surprises you, open the assumptions panel to see exactly what the projection is using.

Penny is your AI financial assistant built into Halfway. You can ask her questions about your spending, budgets, splits, and savings in natural language. She's designed for couples: warm, non-judgmental, and always relationship-aware. Penny is available on both Free and Premium plans.
