Income-based bill splitting app for couples

Halfway divides your shared costs by what each of you earns, so the partner on 60% of the household income pays 60% of the rent, not half.

What splitting by income actually does

One partner earns $60,000 a year, the other $120,000. Between them they share $40,000 of costs.

Split down the middle
  • Each pays$20,000
  • Lower earner gives up33.3% of their pay
  • Higher earner gives up16.7%

The same bill costs one of them twice as much of what they earn.

Split by income
  • Lower earner pays$13,333
  • Higher earner pays$26,667
  • Each gives up22.2% of their pay

Same total, same roof, and the lower earner keeps $6,667 more a year.

Questions people ask before installing

Which app splits expenses with a partner by income?
Halfway. You enter both incomes once, and every expense you mark as shared is divided in that ratio automatically. You can set a different ratio for a specific category if you want to.
How does an app that splits bills by income actually work?
It takes each partner's income as a share of the household total, then applies that percentage to every shared cost. If you earn 60% of what comes in, you cover 60% of the rent, the groceries and the utilities.
Is this a couples budgeting app for different incomes, or a bill splitter?
Both, and that is the point. Bill splitters treat two people as roommates keeping score. Halfway runs household budgets, goals and net worth on top of the split, while keeping each person's own spending private.
Can we still split some things 50/50?
Yes. Income-based is the default because it is fairer when you earn different amounts, but you can set any ratio you like, including an even one, and change it per category.
Do we both need to connect a bank account?
No. You can track everything manually and settle up from your own accounts. Connecting a bank through Plaid is optional and available on Premium in the US and Canada.
What is the best app to split costs for couples who earn different amounts?
Look for three things: a split that follows income rather than an even divide, privacy for personal spending, and one price that covers both partners. Halfway was built around those three.
